How to Go Backpacking During The Holidays - weHow.com

Hey guys,

Check out my first eHow.com article on How to Go Backpacking During The Holidays - weHow.com:

"Go on a trip with a difference these holidays! Take a load off, be with family, relax, move around and get out into nature with a backpacking trip.

Things You'll Need

A backpack, a location, comfortable walking shoes and a friend. All of which you can get below, except for the friend :)

Instructions

STEP 1: Find a place near you where you have always wanted to go for a walk. If you can't think of any, ask yourself if there are any places national parks, forests or an areas out in nature. So you can get some fresh air.

STEP 2: Jump on the internet, or go to the phone book and find out if there are any walking trails there. For a detailed list go to http://hop.clickbank.net/?uniqvalue/backpk Most will have walking trails by default, so just go anyway.

STEP 3: Decide how long you will hike. I recommend up to a day or just a few hours if you have never gone hiking or backpacking. This is more than enough to unwind and relax.

STEP 4: Pack some snacks, water and a camera for the one day trip in your backpack. Again if you want more information on what to take with you go to http://hop.clickbank.net/?uniqvalue/backpk

STEP 5: Call a friend and go to your selected location.

STEP 6: As you walk around, take in the sites, sounds, smells around you as you walk at your own pace. This will ensure you relax and unwind as much as possible.

Overall Tips & Warnings

There is a national park, forest or walking trail within driving distance of virtually ever city in the world. And the internet is the best place to find them if you can't think of any right now.

Make sure you don't go for too long. Stay within your limit and ability to walk. Particularly if you are taking children with you. The idea is for everyone to enjoy themselves so stay winthin your limits."

The Big Deal About Carrying A Compass

When we are out backpacking, hiking, camping or day tripping, should we carry a compass?

For the new comers, a compass is a small device used to identfy which direction is North, which is South and which is East and West. Personally I dont carry one, but there is always some one in my group who does.

They are used with a map, so that you can orient yourself and know where to go. I would recommend you carry one, firstly if you know how to use it. Otherwise theres no point. Also, you should have one if you are going on a longer hike. By longer, I mean for more than one day. Especially if there are no trail maps provided in the park.

So that if you lose your way, you will be able to find your location and get to your destination.

Now when chosing a compass you dont have to go all out with a Rambo-Type-Nuclear-Blast-Resistant-Compass. Just a quality 5 buck comapss with a warranty/guarantee so you know you can trust it. This will also cut down on the wieght you're carrying.

Take care and Safe Backpacking,

Tomasz

PS There are compasses for 99 cents that you can hang off your backpack too.

One Of The MOST Amazing Places To Go Backpack

Hey guys,

Last year I was in the USA and travelled around the great state of California (Wooohoooo!) One of my stops was in Yosemite National Park.

This was one of the most SPECTACULAR locations, not just for hiking and backpacking, but just to visit in general. I have seen some amazing places and a number of beautiful national park... living in Australia we have plenty of those. But Yosemite had a feel to it that I have never experienced before.

The cliff faces that just went straight up. Straight up into the heavens, it seemed like. I tried to take photos but the camera lense just wasnt big enough! Dont you hate that? When your camera just doesnt capture the moment. You have to be there to see the surroundings, feel the grandure of the mountains, hear the sound of the water falls, smell the crisp fresh air, and taste the antisipation as you hike to the top of a mountain. Well you dont have to go to the top of a mountain, there are plenty of flat trails. And once you get to the top, you just sit there and take it all in.

This is one loaction I recommend every hiker, walker, backpacker, mountain climber or anybody else who enjoys nature should experience once in their life.

Happy Backpacking,

Tomasz

What Every Serious Backpacker Must Know About Picking The Right Hiking Boots!

Here are a few essential tips for finding the right boots for you:

1 - Look for shoes at the end of the day after you've done some walking so that the shoes fit your foot correctly. After a day of walking your foot changes its shape. Next...

2 - Get a thick pair of walking socks and wear them when you try on some shoes. This is what you will be wearing on the hike for comfort. So wear them when you are buying the shoes. And remember to...

3 - Try a wide range of brands and sizes. Your usual size may vary depending on the brand, so experiment with a couple varieties. The idea is to...

4 - Get shoes that are a SLIGHT loose fit so that your foot has room to move. NOTE that we dont want loose shoes, just not overly tight ones. And...

5 - If you're going on a light hike or walk, choose a light and flexible shoe. These are more comfy than heavy ones. For the boot itself..

6 - The top part should have as few seams as possible. This will reduce the likleyhood of water seeping thru. This means that, less seams means more water resistance. And thats a good thing!

7- If you are going on a long and rugged hike, the shoes should be more sturdy, tough and durable. On the other hand, if you expect to go a light hike, then a more flexible yet sturdy boot is more appropriate. And finally...

8 - For increased tracking, get deeper treads on the shoes. Treads are the grove in the rubber of the under side or sole of the shoe.

All the best in finding that perfect shoe!

Tomasz

PS Your boots may not be very comfy at first. They may be a bit stiff and some even have a metal shank in the sole. But as you wear them in, you will feel like you're walking on clouds...ahhhh
